How to fix VPN error 807 Windows 8.1?

Editorial Staff Blog

VPNs are a powerful way to maintain privacy and get secure access to remote networks. However, like all software, they can run into issues. One of the more common problems Windows 8.1 users face is VPN Error 807. If you’ve encountered this message, it typically means that the network connection between your computer and the VPN server was interrupted.

This error might seem daunting at first, but with the right steps, you can resolve it fairly quickly. Keep reading to learn what causes VPN Error 807 and how to fix it effectively.

What Causes VPN Error 807?

Error 807 usually appears due to one or more of the following reasons:

  • A firewall or antivirus is blocking VPN access
  • Incorrect VPN configuration or credentials
  • Network congestion or unstable internet connection
  • A faulty VPN server or the VPN service being temporarily down

When this error occurs, Windows might tell you:

“Error 807: The network connection between your computer and the VPN server was interrupted…”

Step-by-Step Solutions to Fix VPN Error 807

Try the following methods one by one to determine which one resolves the issue for you.

1. Restart Your Devices

This might sound simple, but restarting both your computer and modem/router can sometimes clear up a temporary glitch that’s disrupting the VPN connection.

2. Disable Your Antivirus and Firewall Temporarily

Sometimes, security software mistakenly blocks VPN connections. You can temporarily disable your antivirus and Windows Firewall to see if the VPN succeeds:

  1. Open the Control Panel
  2. Go to System and Security > Windows Firewall
  3. Click “Turn Windows Firewall on or off” from the left panel
  4. Select “Turn off Windows Firewall” for both private and public networks

Note: Be sure to turn it back on after testing. If disabling these fixes the VPN, consider adding an exception for the VPN software instead of leaving your system unprotected.

3. Reconfigure VPN Settings

If your VPN protocol is set incorrectly, the connection may fail. Try switching to a different protocol such as PPTP, L2TP, or SSTP. You can do this by:

  1. Going to Network and Sharing Center
  2. Click “Change adapter settings”
  3. Right-click your VPN connection and choose Properties
  4. Go to the Security tab and select a different Type of VPN

PPTP is known for being faster and simpler to set up, though it’s less secure than other protocols. Choose what’s right based on your needs.

4. Ensure Your Internet Connection is Stable

Low bandwidth or unstable internet can easily be the culprit. Check your connection with another website. If you see long loading times or timeouts, the VPN isn’t the problem—your internet is.

Try connecting via Ethernet cable if you’re using Wi-Fi, or contact your ISP if the speed seems too low for a proper VPN connection.

5. Check If the VPN Server Is Reachable

The problem might not be on your end at all. If the server is down or at capacity, your connection will be dropped. Try connecting to a different server location within your VPN client or contact the VPN provider’s support channel.

6. Update Network Drivers

Outdated or corrupt network drivers can cause connectivity problems. To update your drivers:

  1. Open Device Manager
  2. Expand Network Adapters
  3. Right-click on your network adapter and select Update Driver Software
  4. Choose Search automatically for updated driver software

After updating, reboot your system to apply the changes.

7. Switch VPN Services

If none of the above solutions work, the problem might be your VPN service itself. Try using a different VPN service temporarily to test if you can establish a successful connection using the same settings.

Final Thoughts

VPN Error 807 on Windows 8.1 can be frustrating, but it’s usually not permanent. Whether it’s a firewall conflict, network instability, or misconfigured settings, a systematic approach will often reveal the issue. Follow the steps listed above, and you’ll likely be back online securely in no time.

Always make sure you’re running a reliable VPN from a trustworthy provider, and keep your network drivers and security software updated for the best experience.
