How to Write a Powerful About Us Page

Most bloggers write an about (quickly), publish it and forget about it. This is a big mistake! You see, your about page is super-important – it happens to be one of the most visited pages on a blog. That’s right, most visitors to a blog will check out the about page. They want to get a glimpse of the person behind the posts.

Given its importance, you have to put your best foot forward and create a killer about page that will woo, wow, and build trust with your (potential) future audience.

And in this post, you will learn how.

#1 Make It Easy to Find

Before anyone stops by your About Us page, they have to be able to find it. So, the first step towards building a great About page is to place it where it’s easily accessible. The best place is in the top navigation bar.

Also, it is crucial that you name your page as “About” or “About Us” for the sake of clarity. Don’t go for fancy names like “Creators Corner” forcing the visitor to think what this page is about.

#2 It’s Not About You

Although, an about us page is about you. It’s not really!! It’s about your audience, and what they will gain from reading your blog.

The traditional approach is to start with your bio. However, while that may be appropriate for a personal blog, it’ better to jump straight-in and tell the reader what they can expect from the blog and how it’s going to benefit them.

By laying-on, the benefits up-front you hit your visitors in the brain. Not the heart. Which makes sense, when you think about it! Someone who is reading your blog for the first time will have no emotional attachment to you; this comes later.

So, give them a good reason to keep reading, you can build that emotional connection later in the page.

#3 Include a Picture

A picture is worth a thousand words, cliché I know, but it’s true. Your about page should have a picture. It helps build trust and breeds familiarity. People will be better able to connect with you, and what you are saying if they can put a face to the words.

#4 Get Personal (but not too personal)

Now, it’s time to talk about yourself. This is where you start to build the brand personality of your blog. Start by telling people where you are from if you have a family, your age (if you want), etc. The more little details like this you can include, the better the mental profile the reader builds of you, which of course help further with building a connection.

But you also want to go deeper. You should talk about your reason for creating a blog in the first place. Here you might share some of your life story that leads you to decide to start blogging. You might also share some of your qualities and values.

However, and this is important, when you write about yourself, don’t make it a memoir.  Don’t drone on, and on. Keep on point.

#5 Mention Praise (I rock)

If you have been featured anywhere for example in a famous publication, or if a notable figure has endorsed you, then you can also mention this on your about us page. There is nothing wrong with a little self-promotion.

#6 Point People To Your Best Content

An about us page is the perfect place to highlight popular posts that a reader might find valuable; this is a great way to get people moving through a blog and engaging with your content. By pointing people to your best posts and pages, you turn them into fans faster, as they get to see the value you provide straight away.

#7 No Selling

The primary purpose of an About page is to help your readers get to know you and to show them why they should read your blog in the first place. That’s it! This is not the place for trying to sell people products or services. This comes later!

It’s best to view your about page as a first date. You are not even holding hands at this stage! Just getting to know each other.

#8 Make it Easy for People to Reach-out

Although you will have a contact page on your blog (or at least you should), you should also include an email address at the end of your about us page – you could also opt for a contact form.

Invite people to contact you should they have any more questions, or if they want to get in touch for some other reason.
